The Journey of a lifetime
Seth Monk is a native of Andover, Massachusetts. After graduating with a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Hartford in 2005, Seth went to Germany and ordained as a Buddhist monk in the Vietnamese Zen tradition.
During his time in the monastery, Seth had the opportunity to meet and practice with many great Buddhist teachers including His Holiness XIV Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hanh, Ajahn Brahm, Pa Auk Sayadaw, His Holiness XVII Karma, Venerable Dhammadipa, and Tenzin Palmo.
While at the monastery he was introduced to Chinese medicine, community living, and began regular meditation practice. Seth also undertook a 3-month silent retreat in which he completed 100,000 prostrations.
The community made pilgrimages to India, Tibet, and Nepal during Seths time in the monastery. He was also able to spent time at Plum Village Monastery in France under the guidance of the Thich Nhat Hanh and the ordained Sangha.
In 2014, Seth left the monastery and travelled to India where he lived in Bodhgaya, the Buddha's place of enlightenment. Befriending Tibetan monks, Seth then travelled north to Sikkim where he spent time at Rumtek Monastery and completed a solo-retreat in a holy cave at Tashi Ding. Later, he travelled to Dharamsala to study the Tibetan language near the home of the Dalai Lama.
Leaving India, Seth travelled to Australia where partook in the 3-month Rains Retreat at Bodhinyana Monastery under the guidance of Western meditation master Ajahn Brahm.
Arriving back in Boston towards the end of the same year, trying to combat the rising opiate crisis in his hometown, Seth began teaching meditation in local schools and working with a local youth center. He also began leading meditations at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
In early 2015, Seth returned to India for a further 8 months of travel and learning. It was during this time that Seth disrobed from the monastic life and set off to find a way to bring the transformative practices of meditation to people of all walks of life, all over the world.
Currently, Seth lives in America, teaching meditation in schools, universities, corporate offices, yoga studios, and though his Meditation Mastery program online.
